Some pics…
As there has been an absence of posts recently and as I have some images sent to me (thanks Paul & Tracy) without reports to go with them I’ve put the images in the gallery.

With a large number of the juniors, many of the boats and Angela up at Strathclyde Park this weekend there will be no junior training this weekend. There will, however, be a training camp running Monday to Friday from 0900-1500. Those in the run up to exams should bring revision as there’s a food and revision session built into the middle of the day for a couple of hours.
New Community Rowing Coach Richard Chapman has added a list of new Lear-to-Row courses to our calendar which are available for booking. See out Learn-to-Row page for details.

An installed tank
Yesterday saw the commencement of construction of the rowing tank. A team from the US rowing tank company Durham Boat Company. Work has proceeded apace and the hope today was that some club members could help turn the tanks over at 0730 this morning. many of the “usual suspects” did. Barbara’s hope that the juniors would was a bit optimistic considering that for many school starts before 0830. It fell to the elder members of the club to pitch in.
This form of tank is the first of its kind in the Europe.
Our 8-station tank has two end sections, a smoothing water section and eight rowing centre sections. Each section is then bolted together along the common 4″ flange and sealed. The rowing unit comprises a monorail, seats and foot stretchers. Load bearing rigger arms are positioned so that a walkway can be installed over the rigger. To achieve the correct load for sweep rowing, an oar with a blade area about the same as a standard sculling oar is used.
The configuration we have consists of two 8-person sweep tanks configured as in a boat with alternating port and starboard stations. This configuration can be used for sculling with special tank sculling oars. All tanks are equipped with two locks for each seat that can be used either sculling or sweep.
The tanks should be ready by the end of this working week.
Funding for the tank was secured from British Rowing and will provide an invaluable tool to teach rowing and to allow our junior rowers to row during the dark winter nights. It will also allow the club to promote year round schools rowing .
The Indoor tank will be available for hire by other clubs and users. Please contact turc.facilities@gmail.com for further information.

Day 1 start - The bits of the tank prior to construction

Day 2 start - Tanks the right way up
To allow all to order club racing kit we have now got a page for the club on the Godfrey Sport website. The page is live as of now and will remain so until the 7th March.
In the meantime you can check out the prices from the website (.pdf file)
Update: Now closed
It’s Tyne Head on Saturday 5th March and help is needed…
If you can help with any of the above please email Rose to confirm when and how ASAP so that we can spread the load!
If only that were just a quote from Wallace and Gromit but the club was the subject of two separate arson attacks on Saturday night. The rapid responses of a member of the public and the police and fire services means we have an operational building. Juniors boated as normal at 8am.

A huge thanks has to go to members of the Mens Vet squad who spent Sunday boarding and making the building weatherproof – you know who you are – it was a fantastic team effort.
The matter is the subject of a formal police investigation and we will keep everyone advised as to progress as and when able. The Police will be issuing a formal press release and we can expect a fair bit of media attention. If approached about this please refer them directly to Barbara at her Club Chair e-mail address (turc.chair@gmail.com).
The building is insured but as yet we have no clear timetable for repair but the club membership will be kept advised.
Let’s Keep Rowing!!!!

Tyne United and Gateshead Council are pleased to welcome Richard Chapman as their new Community Rowing Coach. Richard, who is employed by Gateshead Council, takes up post on Monday February 14th.
A North East lad, Richard learned to row at Liverpool University, and upon completing his degree obtained a part time coaching post working with the two Liverpool rowing clubs. In addition he works for David Lloyd Leisure so has an ‘all-round’ fitness background.
His first couple of weeks will be based with the Council, undertaking the Gateshead induction process. During this time arrangements will be made to introduce him to the club and to finalise his initial work programme. We will let everyone know when he will be in the club.
We plan to have a brief meeting for the parents of our junior athletes on Sunday 6th March at 12:30 in the boathouse. We hope to cover the general plan for juniors over the next year, provide a ‘duffer’s guide’ for parents of rowers and provide a forum for parents to ask questions and meet the club officers involved.
