Talkin Tarn Regatta

Written by

It was a very wet and windy day with big waves at Talkin Tarn in Cumbria which made it difficult for the rowers. Even when conditions are good it is difficult to keep on the course as the rowers have to row across a big wide lake and try to end up still on the narrow course at the finish line. With the strong winds navigation was very difficult for boats without coxes.

Well done to all the rowers in such tricky conditions and a special thank you to Charlotte, Lucy and Dulcie for doing such a good job coxing in tricky conditions.

Considering that we had some new crews with less experienced rowers we had some good competitive races with lots of crews getting through to finals.

Despite the terrible conditions the umpires were strict in imposing disqualifications for crews that ended up slightly off course at the finish line so although Hannah and Anna crossed the line first in the final of the WJ16 2x they were disqualified for being slightly off course. One of the close finals was the J15 2x where Mathew R and Jed were so close to the eventual winners that we were not sure who had won.

TURC were represented by Matt H and Michael B in the final of the J15 single sculls, with Michael rowing up an age group from J14. They were up against Joseph from Chester-le-Street who won silver at Junior Inter Regional Regatta (JIRR).  Joseph won with Michael 2nd and Matt 3rd.

In the J15 4x+ we entered two quads with Michael in Will in one of them who had kindly offered to row up to J15 so that the J15's could all row. The quad with Ethan T-F, Matt H, Mathew R and Jed got through to the final against CLS and QE.  They were narrowly beaten by the other crews despite being in an inferior boat.

The J14 quad crew was entered without Michael or Will in it and still managed to win! The crew included Sam Law (who is only J13), Fraser, Max, Justin (Hexham now but was TURC last season) and Charlotte coxing. The sun came out when the racing had finished - see photo above of J14 quad winners.
