Recreational rowing

Tyne United Rowing Club was one of the first and is still one of the few clubs in the North East to specifically cater for recreational rowing. We have the biggest fleet of recreational rowing boats in the North East (2 x coxed quad sculling boats, 1 x double sculling boat/pair 1 x single sculling boat) and we’ve been actively promoting non-competitive/recreational rowing in the Gateshead region since spring 2009.

Tyne United Rowing Club has just become an accredited British Rowing “Explore Rowing Pioneer Club”. This means that we are certified that we not only cater, but actively promote recreational and non-competitive rowing and provide opportunities for members from other Explore Rowing Accredited Clubs who have been through one of the British Rowing Learn to Row courses to use our recreational fleet.

Just because a rower does not wish to be competitive, does not mean that they may not want to develop. We offer coached sessions to those who wish to develop their rowing technique for personal enjoyment rather than competition so that they can get the most out of their time on the water.

For Tyne United, Recreational Rowing does not just apply to the water – for those who want to keep their feet dry but still want to get fit and enjoy that club atmosphere we offer Social Membership which entitles you to use of the indoor equipment and also access to coaching from our qualified indoor rowing instructors.

Recreational Rowing is at the heart of what we wish to offer as part of the “rowing experience” to the Gateshead and wider North East community. At the club we see this as the next step for those who come to us through our Community Rowing Activities which we will be rolling out throughout the Borough of Gateshead in partnership with Gateshead Council in early 2010.
