The Boat Race of the North
The boat race of the north is an event previously contested between Newcastle and Durham universities, two of the the top rowing universities in the UK.
For the first time this year, Tyne United Rowing Club and Tyne Amateur Rowing Club were invited to the event to race two mixed eights, representing the women, men, seniors, masters and juniors of their respective clubs and representing the the strong rowing club tradition that exists on the river Tyne.
The day was a great spectacle with many people from the area, and the wider region along with fascinated tourists lining the quayside enjoying some high quality racing along what can only be described as an iconic stretch of water. Both clubs gave a great account of themselves on the day with Tyne Amateur Rowing club proving just too strong for Tyne United. Let’s hope this becomes an annual event that both clubs are invited to.
