TYNE UNITED ROWING CLUB

Explore Series Round 5

The Tide Was High

It may have been the first time the TURC Ducks had ever raced on the sea but they managed to hold on to their lead at the top of the Explore Series Table.

There was wonderfully close racing amongst all the crews competing on a gloriously warm and sunny day down at Tynemouth Rowing Club in Prior’s Haven Bay.

In the first race Judy, Maureen, Stephanie and Lindsey were finding their sea legs and getting used to the speedy starts, time and tide waits for no crew.  Next up werer the hosts Tynemouth, it was a nip and tuck battle with a lightening finish from the Tyne United crew and when they crossed the line there was barely a bow ball in it but the home team took the honours.

Finally the Ducks hit their stride and pulled out a comfortable lead in their last race of the day and held it all the way to the air horn beating the Durham crew, next month’s hosts, by a healthy margin.

As ever Tynemouth RC were wonderful hosts and assisted all crews in the art of launching rowing boats into a sea which was doing its best to throw them back onto the shore.  On many occassions coxes and helpers were up to the waists in the, let’s just say not quite as cold as usual, North Sea.

With slick organisation the racing was over in time for a civilised lunch and it wasn’t long before the TURC Ducks and other crews were popping corks and treating themselves to something fizzy.

A great day was had by all and now attention turns to Durham and the art of sweep rowing.
