Medal Success for Tyne United at JIRR

The British rowing Junior Inter-Region Regatta is a national competition between the twelve British rowing regions for rowers in the age groups J14, 15 and 16.  As a result of trials held earlier in the year Tyne United had two crews selected to represent the Northern Region. The competition was held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham on 23rd April 2016.

Our qualifiers were:

  • WJ14 2x – Sophie Wright and Elysia Kirtley
  • J14 2x – Michael Bessent and Will Viney

Time trial heats were held in the morning racing on the six lane course over a distance of 1.5km.  Sophie and Elysia qualified for the B final with the 10th fastest time and Michael and Will qualified for the A final with the 5th fastest time.

In the finals Sophie and Elysia came 3rd in their final improving their ranking to 9th overall. In their final, Michael and Will  quickly established themselves in third position, as the race progressed they closed the gap on the leading boats.  As the three leaders began to sprint for the line Will and Michael moved into silver medal position, eight strokes from the line a Tyne United blade caught a lane marker buoy ripping the oar from the rower’s hand.  The boys recovered quickly earning themselves a well deserved Bronze medal.

It was fantastic to see two Tyne United crews on the list of teams, this is the first time Tyne United have had two crews qualify for the JIRR’s and the first medal winning performance.

Well done to both crews for training hard and putting maximum effort into this competition.
