Adult Learn to Row
We’re set to welcome those who are ready to take on the challenge of learning to row, and to later become a member of our friendly club.
We’re a passionate bunch and train approx. 3 times per week, both on water and on land. We volunteer to bring various rowing events to the Tyne throughout the year and pitch in when a handed is needed at the club. We also socialise outside the club and share other joys of life!
Rowing is a grit-demanding strength, endurance sport, so you should already be active and fit and ready to invest time in your physical development. However, the technique and coordination needed to move a boat well makes rowing more than just about muscle. It’s a tricky sport to master, even for the most experienced members.
The course contains 8 sessions that will start indoors with an introduction to the club facilities and equipment, followed by sessions on our rowing machines and indoor tank where you will learn the basic rowing technique. We will also teach you how to handle and carry heavy rowing boats, coach launches and engines as a team.
After three sessions of practice indoors you will venture out onto the river, guided by a qualified coach and accompanied by some of our experienced volunteering club members. We will talk about water safety and best practice with equipment. We strongly recommend that you attend all the sessions to avoid dips in your learning curve.
Once you have completed the learn to row course there will be an opportunity to hone your skills by continuing straight onto an 8-week development course. And if all things go well, you are then welcome to join Tyne United as a regular member and form part of our friendly community of passionate amateur rowers.
Here you can get stuck to training towards a calendar of regular races – starting perhaps with the Sunday League run by Northern Rowing. For more information, please read on our men’s and women’s squads.
If you don’t have the time to commit to full race training, you can join to row with longer events and distance in mind – these still require a good level of fitness and strength.
We can guarantee that:
• Your focus, fitness and flexibility will improve! but you’ll have to actively work on them too
• You’ll realise that no one at your local gym knows how to use an ergo (rowing machine) properly
• Your car boot will be invaded by muddy wellies and extra rowing kit
• You’ll find it amazingly rewarding when you get it right
• You will start to bore your family and friends about how great rowing is
• You’ll not be able to look at a stretch of water and not want to row on it
If you cannot make either of these courses, please email tyneunited.learn2row@gmail.com to express your interest for the future.
For any queries on the course content or rowing generally, please email us ahead of booking your place.
