Adult Learn to Row
The 8-week course will start indoors with an introduction to our friendly club, followed by a session on our training machines and indoor tank where you will learn the basic rowing technique and how to handle heavy rowing boats as a team.
After three sessions of practice indoors you will venture out onto the river, guided by a qualified coach and accompanied by some of our experienced volunteering club members. We strongly recommend that attend all the sessions avoid dips in your learning curve.
Rowing is a strength endurance sport, so you will find it easier if you are already keeping active and fit, however the technique and crew coordination needed to move a boat well makes rowing more than just about muscle.
Once you have completed the learn to row course there will be an opportunity to hone your skills by continuing straight onto an 8 week development course. And if all things go well, you are then welcome to join Tyne United as a regular member and form part of our friendly community of passionate amateur rowers.
Here you can either focus on improving your skills in a more recreational way, or you can commit more time to training for regular races – starting perhaps with the Sunday League run by Northern Rowing. For more information, please read on our men’s and women’s squads.
We can guarantee that:
• Your focus, fitness and flexibility will improve! but you’ll have to actively work on them too
• You’ll realise that no one at your local gym knows how to use an ergo (rowing machine properly)
• Your car boot will be invaded by muddy wellies and extra rowing kit
• You’ll find it amazingly rewarding when you get it right
• You will start to bore your family and friends about how great rowing is
• You’ll not be able to look at a stretch of water and not want to row on it
