Crews create history, they qualify for Henley!
Yes, Friday the 24th of June saw two Tyne United crews compete in the qualifying races for this year’s world famous regatta.
Henley Regatta one is one the most prestigious and well known rowing events in the world. This year due to its ever growing popularity it has its biggest ever entry with 629 crews wishing to compete for a place in the regatta.
First of the Club’s crews to complete the time trial for a place was our Britannia Challenge Cup crew, a coxed four with:
Stroke: Tom Campbell
Three: Matt Kelly
Two: Ryan Todhunter
Bow: Elliot Sharp
Cox: Lydia Mullins
A strong young crew who have trained immensely hard over recent months had their efforts rewarded as they successfully qualified for Henley Royal Regatta.
Full of enthusiasm and energy they put their all they had left into cheering our second boat on. Our second crew entered the Wyfold Challenge Cup as a coxless four:
Stroke: Ollie Burkinshaw
Three: Adam Lee
Two: Jack Wilkinson
Bow: Will Briggs
Our second boat had a strong row against an even stronger field, with 43 crews competing for only 13 places. Despite a good performance they were unsuccessful in qualifying. Local bragging rights went to the United crew as the four took satisfaction in beating both our neighbour’s Tyne Amateur Rowing Clubs entries into the same event.
This will be the first time the senior men of Tyne United and Northumbria have qualified a four for this unique and historic event. Will Briggs said, “We are very impressed by the continued hard work and dedication shown by the senior squad”.
The entire event will be live streamed via the Henley Regatta YouTube page.
Please show your support by watching their first race at 10.45am Wednesday 29th June 2016.
